Having been a Merwin poetry fan for years, reading one of his prose efforts was no real surprise. For anyone interested in the morphing of a youth into manhood, and a youthful exuberance in language arts morphing into poetic dimension and a penchant for translation, this book is for you. Merwin doesn't belabor the reader with excessive description, just enough to get his point across. (Don't forget, poets are the athletes of language and put the best words in their best order). Merwin seems equally at ease pursuing a wife or wandering down the halls of academe or rescuing a rain forest. This is a clear breezy book, chock full of friends and acquaintances in short episodes, the proverbial breath of fresh air. At the same time, it is like crossing a shallow stream and then stepping into a deeper hole on the way. What the deeper hole is readers must determine for themselves.

Very interesting memoir from the youth of the poet. His memories are told from the point of view and understanding of the time, the experiences. What is not explained are things he might have learned later, as he looked back at these times. The memoirs are as good as the poetry of Mr. Merwin. This book was a pleasure to read and I have kept it on my shelves.

it's not really fair of me th give this only four stars because the book was not what i wanted it to be. a review should be more about the book and not about my expectations or needs. that said, so many of the moments in this book were spellbinding and worthy of being read again.

For those who have read and admired Merwin's poetry over the years, this book is an additional pleasure!This portion of memoir by WS Merwin covers a summer in 1948 after his years at Princeton, when Merwin spent the summer tutoring adolescents at a private estate in New Jersey, Juan-les-Pins on the French Riviera and at the end, in rural Portugal. The descriptions of the places have the poet's eye for vivid detail, and the insights about the people, the employers as well as others at the sites, are nuanced and sensitive. The humorous accounts of learning to drive as well as the sober recollections of Merwin's severe father make this more than a travel documentary and give us an idea of what experiences shaped this exceptional poet. The language and tone made me read small portions so I could prolong and savor the pleasure of reading it!

Easy interesting read

I gave this to my sister for her birthday. She was stunned! W. S. Merwin is one of her favorite poets, and she is currently reading and relishing each page.

Will be appreciated by most readers possessing a sensitivity to the often-agonizingly-beautiful moments in the passage of time.This book addresses a time that is lost to us... when post-war Europe was a third world realm. But it coincides with activities of the author (Pulitzer winning poet) who was becoming an adult.Yeah, it is something of a prose Bolero (the sweet, evenly paced orchestral piece that drives some people crazy), but I loved it. Merwin has an unbelieveably detailed memory, keen appreciation of culture, and delightfully soft touch with syntax.Really wonderful gift for your favorite nostalgic.
