I was duped into buying this book after Amazon suggested it when I had two other anti-thumb sucking books in my cart. I did the "look inside" and fell in love with the illustrations and language, and thought it would be the perfect book to help my 5-year old red-headed daughter finally kick her thumb-sucking habit. I took the 4-star rating as an endorsement and foolishly did not read the reviews. Imagine my horror when I sat down to read this new book with my daughter only to discover that this is the child equivalent of an adult book that tells people to keep smoking. I had to tell my daughter that the end pages must be missing, because everyone knows that at that age you have to stop sucking your thumb. I can’t believe anyone gave an award to a book that encourages a bad habit. The worst part is that the writer, who is obviously incredibly talented, could have come up with a proper ending quite easily. I came up with this in 10 minutes: “Dear thumb my mum explained/that if I keep on sucking you/I will have buck tooth fangs/And it may affect my speech/And that would be too bad/so I have to stop sucking you/Even though it makes me sad/But I will always treasure/The memory of you, dear thumb/But as I must now grow up/ our sucking is all done” ©

This is a cute book, and did say a lot of reasons you shouldnt suck your thumb. I had hoped it would sum it all up some way to encourage kids to stop sucking their thumbs. If you are trying to get your kids to stop sucking their thumbs and hoping this book will help i would say it doesnt without you feeding more information in there.

This is a really cute book, but I should’ve researched it better. I was hoping it would encourage my daughter to stop sucking her thumb but I think it really celebrates thumb-sucking. Oh well, it’s a cute book with cute pictures. She still sucks her thumb though...

Nice book but more of an ode to thumb sucking rather than trying to reduce/eliminate thumb sucking.

Bought this book for my daughter. We are working on giving up sucking our thumb. However this is just a book saying how much the little girl loves her thumb. Needless to say..it was not helpful.

Excellent rhyming verse and the story is thoughtful and fun. So many kids suck their thumbs which comforts them way beyond anything else. This is the fun story of why thumb is so wonderful from a child's POV.I think it would have been nice at the end to put ins a couple of facts about long term effects of thumb sucking such as buck teeth or an overbite caused by thumb sucking for too long.Written by karen Hesse, illustrated by Rich Deas and published by Feiwel & Friends.#PB #thumbsucking

The narrator is in love with her thumb– as much as others might think she should give it up, it’s not going to happen!I was skeptical of this book because, without wanting to start a huge debate, I’m not a fan of thumb-sucking. I used a pacifier as a baby, my kids did, and I will freely admit to a tiny bias against #teamthumb. Not going to fight over it, but there it is. However, this little girl is so earnest and the text is done in such a light-hearted way, I can’t be angry with her or her parents. It’s just downright cute.The rhyme in this book is done really well. Not every line is perfect, but since it’s told in first person, the cadence and emotion in the lines makes up for any little gaps in meter. There’s definitely a “Dr. Seuss” vibe, but it's not sing-songy and totally works. The word choice is fun ("It tastes of pears and carrot stew") and flows really nicely. I'm not thrilled about the idea of encouraging thumb-sucking...but if any book could convince me, this comes close.

Here I am reading this book thinking it would help my son stop sucking his finger. I was extremely disappointed to find that it actually encourages thumb/finger sucking 🤦🏽‍♀️. DO NOT BUY IF YOU ARE TRYING TO END FINGER SUCKING HABITS!
