Amazon.com Review

Anyone attending a Messiah sing-along is most likely to fit in when using this old favorite edition. The musicological work has been superseded by Watkins Shaw's edition for Novello, but his piano reductions are idiosyncratic. This piano-vocal score has no measure numbers or rehearsal figures, but the reduction is pianistic in scope. The choral lines are in smaller type but are workable. The price is of course also highly attractive. Listeners who truly love this work may be interested in the full orchestral score--also at a great price--from Dover, edited by Alfred Mann. --William R. Braun

This is not the Schirmer edition commonly used by performing choirs--it only includes the choruses, not the solos, so the page numbers do not match what most choirs use, and you don't see the recitatives that precede the choral entrances.

Either you love The Messiah or you hate it. I happen to love it. I like this book, in particular because it has all of the singing parts plus the organ accompaniment. It also has the Overture and Pastoral Symphony included. I much prefer this book over the one that only has the chorus parts, although if you're trying to save space on your bookshelf and you don't want the solo parts, this one isn't the book for you.

I bought my own copy of The Messiah for my town's 76th consecutive performance. It was nice to have a copy in which I could make notes. I didn't dare write even in pencil in one of the town copies that are older than I am! The only drawback to this printing is some of the printing is faint like it was reproduced form a faded original. Otherwise, I love my copy and plan on singing in many more performances to come.

It’s the same Schirmer edition that I’ve had for 40 years. Pages started falling out immediately. Took it to an office store and had it spiral bound for just a few dollars. It works better that way especially if propped on a music stand.

I have no question as to the quality of the music. The problem was that the download only downloaded the top portion of each page, leaving the bottom of the page unavailable. I have an older Kindle [Generation 3], that does not have a touch screen, and that might have cured the problem, but I tried twice to download the score, both times unsuccessfully. I have a standard size iPad Air, but it only showed the top half of the page, also. I looked for customer service contact information, and found that for $2.99 I could download a book that would provide me with Amazon Customer Service contact phone numbers.

The Schiller edition was once very good but they appear to have been using the same plates for the last 104 years. So much of it is no longer distinct - there are light spots in the lettering, bars in runs of 16th notes bleed together, etc. Going to seek out a different edition with crisper printing.

The only thing that could be better is if the binding was a comb style binding to make it easier to read at the inside edges. However the printing is easy to read, so I didn't feel if fair to remove a star. After all, I bought the product knowing what kind of binding it had.

I wasn't sure this was the full choral score. It is. I purchased this for my family to use at a Messiah sing along. My nine year old really enjoyed following along (and honestly was excited about the concert and less bored than he has been in the past). I chose the Shirmer edition because that is what our local orchestra uses.
