K. L. Montgomery is well known for her body-positive, sex-positive writing. Fat Girl, a story about a woman, newly separated from her husband of 15 years, approaching 40, and learning to navigate being the single parent of a teenage boy.Finding herself living back home with her parents, embarking on a huge new adventure with her writing, and venturing into the online dating world, she decides she needs to reinvent herself before she turns 40.Claire Sterling is larger than life, and that is not a reference to the fact that she is overweight. She has a snarky wit that I was drawn to immediately. She publishes a blog that has a large following and is no stranger to the cruelty of people. Subjected to fat shaming from an early age at the hand of the one person who should love you unconditionally, it is no wonder that she has body image issues.I loved Claire’s self deprecating sense of humor, although, it also made me a bit sad, as anyone that has experienced body image issues knows that that sort of humor is seated in some sort of discontent. Her character was so easy for me to identify with on so many levels, and experiencing her “reinvention†along with her, I had many laugh out loud moments, cringed at the responses she received on the dating site, and felt real anger and sadness towards her family at times. While this book explores many difficult issues that women (and men) face, it is done in such a way that allows readers to reflect on their own lives and issues and possibly learn how to love themselves in the process!I HIGHLY recommend this read, along with all of K. L. Montgomery’s books, as they all carry the same body-positive, sex-positive messages that so often get lost in a culture of slut-shaming and fat- shaming.
Up until I was 40,I was severely underweight. I tried to gain and couldn't. Around 40, everything changed, nearly abruptly. I became fat. Am still fat. Loved this story with its various themes. I didn't accept myself skinny, and it is difficult to accept myself fat. Whether people mock you as a stick or a balloon, their ridicule hurts. Not a book for just us fatties, but for anyone with an image problem.
No, not talking about writing a story about a woman who is overweight and looking to reinvent herself. How can two people be so clueless? They are afraid, I understand. Claire has every right. She is hit with devastation after devastation; And for the person who should have been the most important person in your life to not have your back, soul crushing. This book is funny, witty, irritating, and makes not only fat girls but girls in general feel good about who we are. A book worth reading and a message worth taking to heart. Love yourself.
I think it's pretty safe to say that very few of us men can relate to Claire, the main character. We don't struggle with the same body conscious issues that women deal with. But as I read Fat Girl, I couldn't help but to think of my own insecurities. We all have them. None of us are perfect and we all have a certain level of "Claire" inside us. With that being said, this book is a combination of non-fiction and self-help. It becomes a mirror with words. You, the reader, become Claire, and who she sees as the Fat Girl is replaced with "Your Insecurity Here." This is a love story. A story about loving yourself. The fact of the matter is we all look in the mirror and focus on what we consider flaws. The rest of the world sees us as a whole. And those closest to us see us as Perfectly Flawed People Who Deserve To Be Loved Unconditionally. This is an amazingly written book that can serve as an entertainingly witty, yet emotional self portrait. There are many ups and downs as well as a few surprises. And in the end....I guess you'll just have to read it to find out.Tyrell
I’m not even going to lie...I couldn’t finish this book. The first 10 chapters had sucked any reserved happiness I had tucked discreetly within before I’d even noticed they were gone. However, after a half dozen chapters later the sucking only intensified.I’d never once wondered if one could actually blow up a Kindle in the microwave...until this book. Don’t worry my Kindle will live another day-I just bought a new microwave and the risks were far too severe.Honestly, this book was nothing but desperation in print. Not the character-the author. The attempts at humor were horrendous. Very and I mean very rarely have I come across a book that was this depressing and filled with hopelessness. For my own mental health I couldn’t finish this book. I feel happier at just the thought of deleting the file from my Kindle.Don’t read this if you’re looking for humor-it has NONE.Don’t read this if you’re looking for hope-there is NONE.Don’t read if you’re looking for romance...really, you need to ask? This book nor this author are for me-the only thing they inspired is my sudden need for Xanax.
Fat Girl (Romance in Rehoboth #1)By K.L. MontgomeryRated 3 starsThis story is mostly narrative which i am not a fan. I am more of a dialogue reader. There were many many thoughts and I tended to get a bit bored. Not only with the inner thoughts but the constant image and body iMage issues. I guess I was looking for something different out of this story (the Jack and Claire story). I have read the others in the series and Claire and her beau make appearances in them. They seem so outgoing and such that I wanted to read their story. Sadly it wasn’t what i was looking for from them. They are so serious, seemingly quiet and most of the time I thought they were only friends in Fat Girl. The storyline was ok. I just wish there was more romance specifically Jack and Claire. I did enjoy her dating situations they made me smile a few times. This is not the first book I have read by this author. I have enjoyed the other Romance in Rehoboth stories and look forward to more.Sorry this book just fell flat for me.
