Great read! The plot is pretty straight forward and the characters are well written. I figured out the gotcha fairly early but still enjoyed it when it popped up near the end. I'm not a climber but I got a sense of what it must be like. I found myself checking some of the jargon and terminology (this is not a bad thing) a number of times. I like it when an author doesn't water down the story with 'baby-step' explanations. That is what Google is for folks! I've read several of the author's books and this one rates as well as any of the others. Great job!
Just as Long made me feel the claustrophobic darkness of 'The Descent' and the creepily fecund jungles of Cambodia in 'The Reckoning', now he has taken me above the world on the sharply vertical climbing walls of Yosemite's El Capitan with 'The Wall'.Hugh Glass and Lewis Cole, once part of the exclusive pioneer climber's society, have returned to Yosemite to meet up again in an effort to recapture their former, simpler lives. Hugh has spent his many years in the deserts of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, where his wife Annie developed Alzheimer's and wandered off into the desert to die. Lewis became a graduate of literature, opening a bookstore/coffee shop. Lewis's marriage to Rachel is teetering on the brink of divorce, and he needs the break as badly as Hugh.Though older, bigger, and stiffer than their younger years, Hugh and Lewis retain the "Climber's superstitions." When scouting their base, Hugh comes across the dead body of a fallen female climber, a very bad sign. Later, after relaying his tale to Lewis over drinks, they meet with a younger Search-and-Rescue climber named Augustine. Augustine's girlfriend was with the party on the mountain with which the fallen climber had been with.Hugh and Lewis believe that their "victory lap" up the Anasazi route will have nothing to do with Augustine's attempt to reach his girlfriend's party, but their personal conditions on the mountain change as unpredictably as the weather. Facing unforgiving El Capitan with demons of the past on their shoulders, will Hugh and Lewis be able to overcome their ghosts?Long is not known for "happily-ever-after" endings, but I admit I was disappointed in the finale of 'The Wall'. I normally feel some sort of attachment to the rest of the storyline, but this ending was a bit too surreal and detached for me to be left fully satisfied. Still, that doesn't stop the book from being worth the purchase, due to the breathtaking realism of clinging to the sheer sides of certain death. Also, visit Long's website at [...] to see real pictures of his actual climb up El Capitan. You can google up images also, but Long's are quite spectacular. The visuals give a little extra "uumph" to the story, at least they did for me because I have never scaled a wall higher than my own bathroom window, the time I locked myself out of the house. Actually seeing the 'Portaledges' climbers sleep on, and the narrowness of some of the "resting spots" mentioned, it really made the story much more thrilling. Enjoy!
Wonderful read. Long combines an excellent climbing story that weaves together an old-school sensibility and modern gymnastic climbing, stories of friendship and lost love, regret, guilt--and a hefty dose of almost magical eeriness to create a compelling story. Two descriptions made me stop and let them soak in: a description of a falcon taking a sparrow, and one of a forest fire seen from above. Both were stunning and unexpected. I savored every reading session with this book.
If you love literature, big adventure and maybe just the teeniest hint of Big Wall Climbing magic realism, this is a fantastic book. Every time I read it I wish I was up at El Cap (of course with my noodly arms I'm going nowhere, so this is the next best thing...!)
The Wall was my 3rd Jeff Long novel and I rate it in the top 10 books I've ever read. My wife knew this was a "good one" as I'd disappeared into my "extreme reading mode" from the time I opened this book. Jeff's prose sometimes takes a little getting used to but once you're hooked, well.... you're just hooked and you expect the same prose in his other work - which he delivers without disappointment. My armpits are still sweating from reading this one.............
Lots of amazing climbing details with plenty of thrills and reality thrown in. Would have given it a 5 but the haunting, ghost-type spirit elements deterred me from buying into the other-wise excellent suspense.
Currently re-reading this thriller, after 7 years.Written with flair and impressive insight and detail,by an actual Climber.A most enjoyable book - just as good the 2nd time around !Jeff also has several other great titles to his creditcheck his website..
If you have not read anything by Jeff Long before, you're in for a real treat. As you may guess from the title, the story centers around the scaling of a cliff-face ("the wall"). The writing is excellent, and the story is offbeat enough to keep your attention glued, and the twists and turns give some quite pleasant surprises! I doubt anyone will not be surprised by the ending. A very good read!
