The author is great

Fascinating and uncannily timely. Kurosawa's focus on truth and the "crime" of inaction and complicity resonate in our own era. Anderer's revelations with regards to his brother provides a haunting undercurrent. Pre-War Tokyo in the 1920's and 1930's was every bit as dynamic and explosive artistically and culturally as Europe, something I had never realized until reading this book.

This is essential reading for anyone interested in Kurosawa's work and the political, cultural and social atmosphere that produced this seminal film. Full of fascinating detail about Kurosawa's personal life and relationship with his brother that will be new even for the most dedicated Kurosawa fan. And for the film buff new to Kurosawa, the book can serve as a helpful, deeply researched introduction to Kurosawa's world, his personal life and the unique moment in Japanese history that nurtured his genius. Highly recommended.

this is a deeply flawed book. altho as a Kurosawa-lover i ended up loving it, a review is problematic for me as a trained academic & J-culture historian. it is a book for hard-core K-lovers only, i would suggest, & not for anybody else.the disclaimer in the afterword "this book does not presume to be a scholarly contribution" does not get the author off the hook. NO FOOTNOTES AT ALL is not excusable under any circumstances when referencing other writers on every 3rd page. it is not only lazy & dishonorable, but also treats readers like idiots with no interest in learning more. why would we be reading this at all, then?there are, in fact, far too many of these references. the bulk of the book is a rehash of K's autobiography, which we can read ourselves in english, plus irrelevant discussions of modern jpns writers, all just so much filler. there are also too many factual errors, both specific [eg. there is no "drowning" flashback in Ikiru, p.50, kinoshita's name was keisuke, p.61] and general [eg. failure to understand the political place of meiji-set films during wartime, p.178, or that the sand-court is in fact historically accurate, p.205] which suggest insufficient knowledge overall. the enormous critical leaps, such as "emptiness" reflecting manchuria [p.104] or seeing K's dead brother in nearly every film are often eye-rollers but personal opinion, of course, & the author is entitled to them altho more supporting evidence would be welcome.two excellent points on the plus side are the informative timeline; & the discussion of K's proletarian activism, which is normally ignored but goes far in explaining his ethic.despite its many unforgivable flaws, however, this is as profound & moving a meditation on K's films as you will find. the last chapter particularly, a perfectly breath-taking exegesis of Rashomon, is worth the whole wade to get there.the book is likely to bore or mystify anyone not very much tuned in to the films (such as the snotty nyt reviewer phillip lopate who failed entirely to understand the place of "sentimentality" in K's work, as well as much else). but for anyone who has ever had their head explode in the presence of a K masterpiece onscreen then wandered dazed from the theatre not recognizing reality anymore, get your fix here. paul understands, & he is here for you. my cinema students @ciec, are you out there? for the redheaded girl with the teddy in her backpack, you know who you are: this one is for you.

A fascinating vantage into the inner life of one of cinema's greatest. Essential reading for any lover of Kurosawa. Essential reading for any filmmaker.
